EVC has announced a partnership with The Jockey Club, the United Kingdom’s largest commercial horse racing organization, to install over 100 fast electric vehicle (EV) charging points across 14 iconic racecourses.

The partnership will see EVC deploying charging points with capacities ranging from 22kW to 150kW at all of The Jockey Club’s venues. Four racecourses, including the renowned Epsom Downs and Newmarket Rowley Mile, have already had the charging points installed. The remaining ten locations are scheduled to complete their installations by the end of 2024, with Sandown Park Racecourse in Surrey set to host 42 charging bays, which is set to be the largest number in this initiative.

Notably, the initiative is being implemented on a fully funded basis by EVC, which will manage the installation, maintenance, and ongoing operations of the chargers at no cost to The Jockey Club.

It should be noted that EVC will provide bespoke installations. Of the 169 charge points planned, 91 will be active sockets, with 78 passive sockets allowing for easy expansion as demand grows. Also, EVC’s Plus app will offer users reduced rates and additional features such as charging session tracking and remote charge control.

Nick Bellamy, CEO of EVC, expressed the broader implications of this partnership stating, “This initiative goes beyond convenience for race fans – it’s a strategic investment in the future of mobility, particularly in locations like the Northwest of England which are currently underserved by public EV charging points.”

Furthermore, this arrangement is made possible by EVC’s recent £165 million investment from Denham Sustainable Infrastructure, aimed at accelerating the company’s goal of delivering up to 100,000 EV charge points across the UK.

As this partnership aligns with The Jockey Club’s goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2027, Kirstin McEvoy, Sustainability Manager at The Jockey Club, emphasized this latest move stating, “Horseracing is a sport with so much heritage, and our partnership with EVC underscores our commitment to seeking out innovations that will enable us to future-proof our racecourses and deliver on our net zero ambitions.”

With EV adoption accelerating in the UK, this partnership arrives at significant moment to further bolster the progress. With recent research by ChargeUK indicates that a new public charge point was installed every 26 minutes on average in the last quarter, more initiatives similar to the partnership will boost confidence among prospective EV owners.

With this partnership between EVC and The Jockey Club, the efforts made in making new strides in merging traditional sports venues with modern charging solutions will help the UK’s goal of phasing out new petrol and diesel vehicle sales by 2030 while set a precedent for other leisure and hospitality sectors to follow.
