The Tesla Cybertruck’s online configurator no longer lists the range extender battery pack as an available option. This bed-mounted auxiliary battery, which promised to extend the electric pickup’s driving range, has been quietly removed from the selection process for new orders.

Range Extender’s Brief Appearance and Disappearance

The Cybertruck range extender was initially introduced as a way to potentially mitigate range concerns for buyers. Tesla estimated that it would boost the dual-motor Cybertruck’s total range to over 445 miles (a reduction from a prior estimate of over 470 miles). The device was designed as a bed-mounted battery pack intended as an auxiliary power source with an announced cost of $16,000.

Its inclusion in the online configurator was relatively recent, appearing after the initial wave of Cybertruck deliveries began. However, without any formal announcement or explanation, the option has now been removed, leaving customers who were considering it without the ability to add it to their new orders.

Implications for Cybertruck Buyers

The removal of the range extender option raises questions for prospective Cybertruck owners seeking maximum driving distance. The current Cybertruck variants offer an EPA-estimated maximum range of 325 miles. For some buyers, especially given that certain competitors in the electric truck segment boast greater ranges, this might necessitate a re-evaluation of their needs.

It remains unclear whether Tesla intends to reintroduce the range extender in the future, offer an alternative solution for extended range, or if their focus will remain on the existing battery configurations.

Focus on Available Cybertruck Configurations

Currently, the Tesla Cybertruck is available in All-Wheel Drive and Cyberbeast models, each offering different range figures and performance levels. Tesla also previously promised a Rear-Wheel Drive Cybertruck trim with a starting price under $40,000, though this version is not currently available for order. It is likely that Tesla will now concentrate its production and sales efforts on the currently orderable configurations.
