Cybertruck Joins Elite IIHS Top Safety Pick+ List for 2026

The 2026 Tesla Cybertruck has earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, marking a significant milestone for the electric pickup despite earlier safety concerns.

The award comes under stricter 2026 testing standards, reinforcing the Cybertruck’s safety credentials at a time when Tesla is working to stabilize sales and public perception.

The Tesla Cybertruck was one of 45 vehicles to receive the highest Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Out of 63 qualifying vehicles this year, the Cybertruck stood out as one of only two pickups, and the only Tesla model, to achieve the top rating.

The 2026 criteria introduced tougher evaluations, including enhanced pedestrian crash prevention and updated front crash testing focused on rear-seat passenger safety, according to Yahoo Autos. To qualify, vehicles needed a “Good” rating in pedestrian front crash prevention and at least an “Acceptable” score in vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention tests.

The recognition marks a notable turnaround for the Cybertruck, which faced scrutiny following multiple recalls within its first 18 months on the market.

The Cybertruck’s achievement comes as Tesla navigates a challenging period, including declining sales in 2025 and increased competition across the EV segment. A strong safety rating could help reinforce consumer confidence, particularly in the pickup category.

Other EVs earning top safety honors include models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, with several award-winning vehicles offering around 300 miles of range and more accessible pricing starting near $35,000.
