ChargePoint Aims To Deploy Omni Port-Equipped Charging Stations By The End Of 2024

In a move to simplify the electric vehicle (EV) charging landscape, ChargePoint has introduced a groundbreaking new technology called the Omni Port in the United States (U.S.).
In detail, this innovative charging solution combines the most commonly used charging connectors, which are Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) and the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) into a single port. As a result, this eliminates the need for drivers to carry adapters or worry about finding a charging station compatible with their EV according to ChargePoint.
Moreover, The Omni Port solution from ChargePoint aims to solve charging needs by combining NACS and CCS connectors, along with the standard SAE J1772 plug for AC charging, the Omni Port ensures that any EV driver can charge at any ChargePoint station, regardless of their EV’s make or model.
Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint, expressed enthusiasm for the new Omni Port solution stating, “With Omni Port, ChargePoint solved the challenges associated with a multiple connector environment, ensuring Tesla and non-Tesla drivers can continue to expect a world-class driver experience.”
Furthermore, ChargePoint claims that the process is simple for EV owners. By entering their EV’s make and model into the ChargePoint app, the Omni Port-equipped station will automatically detect the correct connector type and release it, allowing the charging session to begin seamlessly. Even for those who do not use the app, the charging station’s screen offers a manual selection option to select the appropriate plug.

Notably, ChargePoint now provides over one million charging ports across North America and Europe with 4 billion of these electric miles added in the past year alone. With the addition of this innovative approach, it also removes the requirement for dedicated parking spaces based on connector type. It also provides a future-proof solution that can accommodate the rapidly evolving EV market, ensuring that the more than 5.5 million EVs currently on North American roads can continue to access public charging infrastructure for years to come.
As ChargePoint plans to start rolling out Omni Port-equipped charging stations by the end of 2024 with the option to retrofit existing CP6000 and Express Plus Power Link 2000 models at a nominal cost, this investment in universal charging solutions spotlights the company’s goal to accelerate EV adoption by making the charging experience more convenient, accessible, and inclusive for all EV owners.
