BYD is reportedly planning to establish a new electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Karachi, Pakistan. which marks the company’s strategic entry into the world’s fifth most populous country.

According to Bloomberg, BYD aims to partner with Mega Conglomerate Pvt., one of Pakistan’s largest business groups, in a joint venture that goes beyond the typical dealership model. The company will work with Mega Motors, a subsidiary of Hub Power Co., Pakistan’s largest independent electricity producer.

While exact details of the plant are still under discussion, the plant is aimed for completion in the first half of 2026 and will be located near Karachi’s Port Qasim area, an industrial zone that already houses assembly plants for automakers including Toyota, Suzuki, and Kia.

Moreover, the company plans to introduce three initial models to the Pakistani market including an SUV and a sedan with additional battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to follow. BYD aims to start sales in Q4 2024, setting up showrooms in cities including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.

Notably, BYD’s entry into Pakistan comes at a time of increasing competition in the country’s automotive landscape. Chinese automakers such as Great Wall Motor, SAIC Motor, and Chongqing Changan Automobile have already made inroads.

Furthermore, BYD has been making significant pushes into Southeast Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The company recently opened its first overseas plant in Thailand and has plans for production plants in Hungary, Brazil, and Turkey as well.

Despite Pakistan’s EV market being small compared to overall auto sales, projections of rapid growth have been noted. As the country has set a target of having EVs account for 30% of new car sales by 2030, BYD’s presence in the nation will assuringly enhance that growth.
