BYD regained the global battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales crown in the second quarter, selling 557,090 passenger EVs compared with Tesla’s 480,126 deliveries.

While Tesla posted a stronger year-over-year growth rate and significantly outperformed Wall Street expectations, BYD finished the quarter with nearly 77,000 more BEV sales.

BYD returns to the top after first-quarter setback

BYD reported second-quarter passenger BEV sales of 557,090 units, up nearly 80% from the first quarter’s 310,389 vehicles. Although the figure represented an 8.2% decline from a year earlier, it was enough to reclaim the quarterly global BEV sales lead.

Tesla had led BYD by roughly 48,000 BEVs in the first quarter. The second-quarter rebound allowed BYD to reverse that result, outselling Tesla by 76,964 vehicles, or approximately 16%, according to CNEV Post.

The figures include only BYD’s passenger battery electric vehicles and exclude the company’s plug-in hybrid models, which continue to account for a significant share of its overall sales.

The latest results also extended BYD’s lead in cumulative BEV sales for the first half of the year. The company sold 867,479 passenger BEVs during the six-month period, compared with Tesla’s 838,149 deliveries.

Tesla beats expectations with record second quarter

Tesla reported global deliveries of 480,126 vehicles during the second quarter, a 25% increase from a year earlier and a 34% improvement over the first quarter.

The result significantly exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimate of 406,024 vehicles and marked Tesla’s strongest second quarter on record, surpassing the 466,140 deliveries achieved during the second quarter of 2023.

Tesla produced 451,758 vehicles during the quarter, meaning deliveries exceeded production by about 28,000 units. The company effectively reduced inventory after the first quarter, when production exceeded deliveries by roughly 50,000 vehicles.

Tesla also deployed 13.5 GWh of energy storage products during the quarter, representing more than 40% year-over-year growth, though the result came in slightly below analyst expectations.

The automaker will release its second-quarter financial results on July 22, when investors are expected to look for additional details on demand, profitability, and the company’s outlook for the remainder of the year.
