BYD is taking an unusual step to build confidence in advanced driver-assistance technology, announcing that it will cover financial damages resulting from certain accidents that occur while drivers are properly using its latest autonomous driving system. The initiative is tied to BYD’s new God’s Eye 5.0 platform and represents one of the most aggressive confidence guarantees yet offered by a major automaker in the rapidly evolving self-driving technology race.
The program applies to eligible vehicles in China and is designed to encourage more drivers to adopt and trust advanced driver-assistance features.
Under the program, BYD said it will directly assume financial responsibility for damages resulting from legally relevant accidents that occur while the company’s Urban NOA system is being used correctly.
Urban NOA, or Navigate on Autopilot, is designed to assist with city driving by handling tasks such as steering, acceleration, braking, lane changes, and navigation through urban environments. The system also covers certain automated parking functions, according to CarUp.
The technology falls into the advanced driver-assistance category rather than full autonomy. Similar to Tesla’s supervised Full Self-Driving system, drivers must remain attentive at all times and be prepared to immediately take control if necessary.
To qualify for coverage, motorists must use the system according to BYD’s guidelines. The company monitors driver attentiveness through interior-facing cameras to verify compliance with system requirements.
The guarantee will reportedly remain valid for one year and is available to both new customers and existing owners who upgrade to the God’s Eye 5.0 platform.

The announcement highlights the increasingly intense competition among automakers seeking leadership in advanced driver-assistance systems.
Chinese manufacturers have been accelerating investments in autonomous driving technologies as software capabilities become a key differentiator in the world’s largest automotive market. BYD’s willingness to assume financial liability under certain conditions signals a high degree of confidence in its system’s performance.
The move could also help address one of the biggest barriers to adoption: consumer trust. While many modern driver-assistance systems are capable of handling large portions of a journey, some motorists remain hesitant to rely on the technology, particularly in complex urban environments.
By offering financial protection, BYD hopes to encourage more customers to experience the technology firsthand.
The program currently applies only in China, where BYD continues to expand deployment of its latest intelligent driving features. Whether similar guarantees eventually appear in other markets remains uncertain, but the initiative could place additional pressure on competing automakers to demonstrate confidence in their own autonomous driving systems.
