BYD posted a month-on-month rebound in April sales, but continued year-on-year declines highlight ongoing pressure in China’s EV market.

The automaker is increasingly leaning on strong overseas growth to offset softer domestic demand and intensifying price competition.

BYD sales rise sequentially as overseas growth accelerates

BYD reported April new energy vehicle sales of 321,123 units, up 6.96% from March. However, this marked the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year decline, with volumes down 15.51%.

For the first four months of 2026, BYD delivered 1,021,586 vehicles, a 26.02% drop year-on-year, reflecting seasonal weakness and broader slowdown in China’s auto market, according to CNEV Post.

The standout performer was BYD’s international business. Overseas passenger vehicle and pickup sales reached 134,542 units in April, surging 70.9% year-on-year and setting a new record. The growth underscores BYD’s expanding global footprint as it pushes into new markets.

Brand mix and pricing pressures shape BYD strategy

Within BYD’s portfolio, its core Dynasty and Ocean lineup accounted for 273,448 units. Sub-brands showed mixed results, with Fang Cheng Bao delivering strong growth of over 190% year-on-year, while Denza declined on an annual basis despite a monthly rebound. The ultra-luxury Yangwang brand posted modest volumes but continued to grow year-on-year.

Financially, BYD is navigating mounting pressure. First-quarter net profit fell 55.38% to 4.09 billion yuan, driven by intense price competition, reduced government incentives, and rising supply chain costs.

To offset these challenges, BYD has raised pricing for certain advanced driver-assistance features and accelerated the rollout of new models equipped with ultra-fast charging and its second-generation Blade Battery.

The company is also pushing further into the premium segment, highlighted by the launch of high-end vehicles like the Yangwang U9 supercar.

As domestic conditions remain challenging, BYD’s ability to sustain international growth and defend margins will be critical in maintaining its leadership in the global EV market.
