BYD is gearing up to make waves in the European electric vehicle (EV) market with its latest offering, the Seal 06 GT, set to be officially unveiled at the end of August.

The Seal 06 GT, a production version of the Ocean-M concept, is built on BYD’s new e-Platform 3.0 Evo. This platform features a structural battery pack, marking a significant advancement in EV technology. There will be two powertrain options available for the EV model: a base single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version with 214 horsepower and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant that delivers a combined output of 415 horsepower.

While performance figures have not been officially released, the Seal 06 GT will offer two battery pack options: a 59.52 kWh pack for base models and a larger 72.96 kWh pack for higher-spec versions.

These batteries are projected to provide a range of 313 and 375 miles respectively on the Chinese CLTC test cycle. However, the more realistic WLTP cycle used in Europe is likely to reduce these figures by at least 10%.

Targeting the European Market

Despite BYD’s strong performance in China, with seven out of the ten most popular vehicles last month, the Seal 06 GT appears to be designed with European buyers in mind. It will enter a segment where the smaller Volkswagen ID.3 and MG4 have seen success, offering a larger and more upscale alternative. However, the recent implementation of import tariffs on Chinese EVs in Europe could potentially impact BYD’s plans for the continent.

In China, BYD is targeting a price range of 150,000 to 200,000 yuan (around $21,000 to $28,000) for the Seal 06 GT. Sales in China are expected to start in Q3 of this year, with a European launch likely to follow. As BYD continues its European expansion, the Seal 06 GT will be another addition to its EV market.

The official debut of the BYD Seal 06 GT is scheduled for August 30 at the Chengdu Auto Show, where more details about specifications, pricing, and availability are expected to be revealed.
