BMW has unveiled the all-new 2027 BMW i3, marking the debut of its next-generation “Neue Klasse” electric platform. The midsize electric sedan is positioned as the EV counterpart to the 3 Series and represents a major technological and design shift for the brand as it moves deeper into electrification.

The new i3 shares its architecture with the upcoming iX3 SUV and is expected to go on sale later this year, though pricing has not yet been announced.

BMW introduces Neue Klasse i3 with new platform and performance

The 2027 i3 is built on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform, featuring an 800-volt electrical architecture designed to support ultra-fast charging speeds of up to 400 kW.

The sedan launches with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque, placing it firmly in the performance-oriented segment of midsize EVs, according to Car and Driver.

BMW estimates a maximum range of around 440 miles (EPA), supported by a 109 kWh battery pack that uses more energy-dense cells than the company’s previous EVs.

Dimensionally, the i3 is similar to the gas-powered BMW 3 Series, though slightly larger overall with a longer wheelbase. Unlike the i5 and i7, which share platforms with their combustion counterparts, the i3 rides on a dedicated EV architecture, highlighting BMW’s shift toward purpose-built electric vehicles.

The model also introduces a new computing system with four onboard supercomputers, which BMW says deliver up to 20 times more processing power than previous models while reducing system complexity.

Interior design and technology signal major shift for BMW

Inside, the i3 features a redesigned cabin centered around BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive system, which uses a full-width display at the base of the windshield to present key driving information.

A separate nearly 18-inch central touchscreen handles infotainment and vehicle controls, while an available head-up display adds another layer of driver information.

The interior layout represents a significant departure from traditional BMW designs, emphasizing digital interfaces and a minimalist approach.

Externally, the i3 blends familiar BMW styling cues with a new design language. The vehicle retains twin kidney grilles and distinctive lighting elements, while introducing a more aerodynamic front end inspired by BMW’s classic “shark nose” design.

BMW has described the Neue Klasse vehicles as the “new heart” of its brand, signaling their importance in the company’s long-term strategy as it transitions toward electrification.
