BMW is preparing an all-electric version of the next-generation 1 Series hatchback, with the new EV expected to arrive in 2028 featuring Rear Wheel Drive architecture and up to 322 horsepower.
The model will become part of BMW’s broader Neue Klasse rollout and is aimed at attracting younger buyers in key European markets.
The upcoming electric 1 Series, expected to carry the i1 name, will sit on BMW’s dedicated Gen6 EV platform rather than sharing underpinnings with combustion models.
Unlike the current Front Wheel Drive-based 1 Series, the new EV will use a rear-biased architecture. BMW development boss Joachim Post said the platform’s flexibility could even allow the return of a three-door version, according to Autocar UK.
“For a different size or proportion, you realise that’s not the big issue it was in the past,” Post said. “[With the platform] you can make a two-door, a three-door. That’s not an issue for a battery car.”
BMW is expected to offer the electric hatchback with a single rear-mounted motor producing up to 322 horsepower in its most powerful standard form. The platform can also support dual motor setups, opening the possibility for a future M-badged performance version with around 463 horsepower.

The electric 1 Series will adopt BMW’s Neue Klasse design language first seen on the iX3 and upcoming i3 sedan, while retaining a traditional hatchback shape instead of moving toward a crossover or mini MPV style.
BMW compact car design boss Oliver Heilmer said the Neue Klasse philosophy focuses on giving each model line its own identity.
“BMW always stood for that differentiation,” Heilmer said. “We never did a small series that looked like a shrunken 7 Series.”
Inside, the EV hatchback will feature BMW’s next-generation cabin layout with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a 43.3 inch Panoramic iDrive display replacing a traditional instrument cluster.
BMW also plans to equip the electric 1 Series with its latest driver assistance systems and new AI “superbrains,” regardless of powertrain choice.
The automaker is expected to position the EV close to the current 1 Series price range, targeting around £30,000, significantly below the larger i3 sedan.
