BMW’s Component Plant 02.20 In Dingolfing, Germany Produced Over 1.5 Million Electric Motors And One Million High-Voltage Batteries

BMW’s Component Plant 02.20 in Dingolfing, Germany, has marked a new major milestone in its electric vehicle (EV) production journey, celebrating ten years of manufacturing electric powertrain components.
In BMW’s Component Plant 02.20 ten-year milestone, the plant has produced over 1.5 million electric motors, one million high-voltage batteries, and ten million battery modules. This cements its position as the heart of BMW’s e-mobility efforts.
Since 2015, BMW invested over one billion euros to transform the former spare parts warehouse into an advanced Competence Centre for E-Drive Production. This substantial investment has resulted in the establishment of around 15 production lines for battery modules, electric motors, and high-voltage batteries.
Stefan Kasperowski, Vice President of High-Voltage Battery Production at Bavarian plants, expressed the crucial role of Plant 02.20 stating, “We provide the BMW Group’s vehicle plants with a reliable and flexible supply of e-drive components for our electrified vehicles.”
As for the workforce, the plant has grown exponentially from an initial 200 employees to over 2,500 today, many of whom transitioned from other areas of vehicle production. This growth reflects the increasing demand for EVs and BMW’s commitment to meeting it.
Markus Fallböhmer, Senior Vice President of Battery Production at BMW Group, recalled the challenges of the plant’s rapid transformation stating, “Redesigning and transforming Plant 02.20 at this record pace was certainly quite a feat. We managed construction work, commissioning of systems, and series production virtually simultaneously.”

As of now, the Dingolfing plant produces about 80% of all BMW’s electric motors and 60% of its high-voltage batteries. To meet growing demand, BMW has expanded its e-drive production network globally, with additional locations in Leipzig, Regensburg, Spartanburg (U.S.), and Shenyang (China). New plants are also being established in the United States (U.S.), Mexico, China, Hungary, and Lower Bavaria for the upcoming sixth generation of e-drive components, set to debut in 2025 with the Neue Klasse models.
With BMW reporting a 34.1% increase in EV sales for the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, the company’s presence in the EV market is growing strong. As BMW continues to expand its EV plants, the success of Plant 02.20 over the past decade has positioned the company at the forefront of the automotive industry’s transition to electric mobility.
