General Motors has significantly improved DC fast-charging performance for the revived Chevy Bolt, addressing one of the most common criticisms of the previous generation. The updated 2027 model is designed to reduce charging times substantially, expanding the Bolt’s usability beyond short-range driving.
According to GM, the 2027 Chevy Bolt supports DC fast-charging speeds of up to 150 kW, a major increase from the prior model’s peak rate of 55 kW. During validation testing, engineers achieved a 10 percent to 80 percent charge in approximately 26 minutes, compared with more than 70 minutes for earlier versions.
Jeremy Short, the Bolt’s chief engineer, told InsideEVs and Automotive News that the focus was not just on peak charging power, but on maintaining higher charging rates across a broader portion of the battery’s state of charge. He said sustained charging performance is what delivers real-world benefits for drivers during longer trips.

The charging improvements are enabled by a comprehensive electrical redesign. The 2027 Bolt moves to GM’s Global B electrical architecture, replacing the systems used in the outgoing model. It also shares its X76 electric drive unit and high-voltage components with the Chevy Equinox EV, allowing GM to leverage higher production volumes, according to GM Authority.
A key change is the introduction of a new 65-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, marking the first use of LFP chemistry in a Chevrolet EV sold in North America. GM estimates the updated Bolt will deliver approximately 255 miles of driving range.
The vehicle also features a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, enabling direct access to Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. GM said the charging system was validated during multiple long-distance test drives between Detroit and California, covering more than 100 charging sessions across several charging networks.
GM has positioned the 2027 Bolt as a limited-run model priced below $30,000, with the charging upgrades intended to make it more practical as a primary vehicle for a wider range of drivers.
