Volkswagen and Xpeng have elevated their partnership with a major upgrade by unveiling a new Electrical/Electronic (E/E) architecture that will be integrated into a broader range of electric vehicles (EVs).

When it first started in July 2023 and finalized in February 2024, the partnership was focused on integrating the new E/E architecture into Volkswagen EVs based on the China Main Platform (CMP). At that time, it was planned for at least four models from 2026.

Moreover, the CMP, developed independently at VW’s new eMobility Development Centre (VCTC) in China, was designed to operate with Xpeng’s technology. The expanded agreement now includes integration into Volkswagen’s models based on the global MEB platform as well according to Xpeng.

Starting in 2026, this architecture will be integrated into Volkswagen’s China-specific CMP EV platform as well as the global MEB platform for the Chinese market.

In detail, Volkswagen refers to the new architecture as the China Electronic Architecture (CEA), which aims to simplify system complexity, improve cost efficiency, and enhance digital capabilities across Volkswagen’s EV lineup in China. This new architecture is expected to facilitate advanced autonomous driving features and sophisticated cockpit software functions.

Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen’s Member of the Board of Management for China, expressed the importance of the partnership stating, “The rapid progress in the close cooperation between Volkswagen Group and XPENG underlines the great potential of this partnership. We are now taking the next step together with the joint development of a highly modern E/E Architecture, which is also a milestone in our ‘in China for China’ strategy.”

Furthermore, the partnership also includes the establishment of project houses in Guangzhou and Hefei, where engineers from both companies will work closely to develop the new E/E architecture. These plants are expected to accelerate the development process, with the first model equipped with this new architecture aimed to enter production in around 24 months.

With this new E/E architecture in the works, Volkswagen and Xpeng goal for the EV market in China will see them enhancing their competitive edge as the new E/E architecture will be a strong determinant to elevating their position in the Chinese EV industry.
