Volvo Accelerates Plans To Move EX30 Production To Belgium To Avoid New Tariffs On Chinese EVs.

Volvo has announced that its anticipated EX30 electric vehicle (EV) will not arrive in the United States (U.S.) until 2025. Originally aimed for a summer 2024 launch, this delay arrives as a result of changes from new tariffs on Chinese EVs.
Volvo’s EX30 was initially set to be a top-seller in the U.S. market. However, recent developments including the Biden Administration’s implementation of 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs and the European Union’s (EU) proposed 38% tariff on Chinese EV imports, have forced Volvo to reconsider its strategy.

In response to the new tariffs, Volvo is accelerating its plans to shift EX30 production from China to its plant in Ghent, Belgium. This move, originally scheduled for 2025, is now being fast-tracked to meet U.S. market demands while avoiding the hefty tariffs associated with Chinese EVs.
With the EX30’s affordable price point of $34,950 in the U.S. market, Volvo has assured buyers with existing preorders that they will be offered several options to drive other new Volvo models until their EX30 arrives. However, the company has not yet provided information on how the shift to European production might affect the EX30’s pricing or trim levels for the U.S. market.
Nonetheless, the arrival of the EX30 will also see competition from a new wave of affordable EVs as the delay may impact Volvo’s ability to capitalize on the growing demand for affordable EVs in the U.S. market. For now, the evolving EV landscape will continue to navigate these challenges with new tariffs and competitive pricing in the EV market.
