Volkswagen has unveiled a new addition to its electric vehicle (EV) lineup, reimagining a cult classic for the modern era with the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, revealed at the ID Meeting in Locarno, Switzerland.

According to Volkswagen, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE pays homage to the legendary Golf FIRE+ICE models of the early 1990s while embracing the latest in EV technology. The one-off show car, developed in collaboration with luxury sports fashion brand BOGNER, marries the sporty performance of the ID.3 GTX with the exclusive design elements that made the original FIRE+ICE Golf a collector’s item. 

Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen’s head of design, emphasized the emotional appeal of this new model, stating, “With the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, we are emphasizing how highly emotional our sporty top model is.”

The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE stands out with its exclusive 3-layer paint job featuring a glass bead effect. The Electric Violet pearl color pays tribute to the dark violet pearl-effect finish of its predecessor, creating a dynamic appearance that shifts from dark blue to violet or even black depending on lighting conditions.

Geometric FIRE+ICE patterns decorate the sides in transparent matte, while 21-inch rims and the original FIRE+ICE badge from the ’90s on the B-pillar and roof spoiler complete the exterior design.

For the interior, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE displays a split color scheme with flaming red accents on the driver’s side and ice blue elements for passengers. Tom Becker, director of BOGNER FIRE+ICE, noted, “The special thing is that we were able to integrate many of our original materials and accessories into the interior of the vehicle.” 

Moreover, there are unique touches on the EV model including FIRE+ICE logos on the pedals and B-zippers revealing fabric from the original ’90s model.

In terms of performance, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is equipped with Volkswagen’s most powerful electric motor to date. It delivers up to 240 kW (321 horsepower) and can accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. The 79 kWh battery provides a WLTP range of up to 601 km (373 miles), with fast-charging capabilities allowing a 10% to 80% charge in around 26 minutes.

This new EV model serves as a spiritual successor to the Golf FIRE+ICE, which achieved cult status in the 1990s. Originally planned for a limited run of 10,000 units, the unexpected popularity of the Golf FIRE+ICE led to total sales of 16,700 vehicles.

While currently presented as a one-off show car, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE represents Volkswagen’s goal to mix its rich heritage with cutting-edge EV technology.
