U.S. Charging Expansion Accelerates With 9,000 New Chargers In Seven Weeks, Advancing The 2030 Goal Of 500,000 Ports

The United States (U.S.) has reached a momentous milestone in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure development, exceeding 200,000 public EV charging ports nationwide.
According to the U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, the rapid growth is evident in recent statistics, with around 9,000 new ports added in just seven weeks following the Q3 2024 update. This acceleration puts the nation wellon track to achieve the administration’s goal of 500,000 chargers by 2030.
As a result, this achievement marks a dramatic expansion of the national charging network, which has nearly doubled since the beginning of the Biden administration.
The expansion has been driven by a combination of public funding initiatives and private sector investment, including the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula (NEVI), Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI), and Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability and Accessibility (EVC-RAA) programs.
As of September 30, 2024, drivers can access DC fast chargers every 50 miles along 57.8% of the country’s busiest travel corridors, with coverage expected to reach 70% by the end of 2025.
Notably, the Joint Office has also been instrumental in advancing key standards, including the J3400 (NACS) connector standard, which aims to make charging infrastructure compatible with a broader range of EVs.
Furthermore, as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) now represent nearly 10% of the U.S. light-duty vehicle market, the Joint Office launched a $150 million grant project in August to repair and upgrade 4,500 existing charging ports to maintain the reliability of the growing network.
With this expansion of charging infrastructure, it reflects the most significant transformation of the American transportation system in a century as it supports the increasing adoption of EVs.
