In the realm of autonomous-driving electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla has revealed an extensive roadmap for its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, outlining significant updates and expansions planned through early 2025.

According to Tesla’s roadmap, it showcases substantial improvements in autonomous driving capabilities and a global rollout of FSD features, pending regulatory approvals.

September 2024 Updates and Features

Tesla’s plans kick off this month with several key developments:

  • Release of FSD v12.5.2, promising a threefold improvement in miles driven between necessary human interventions
  • Unified models for AI3 (Hardware 3) and AI4 (Hardware 4) computers
  • Introduction of “Actually Smart Summon” (ASS)
  • Cybertruck-specific updates including Autopark and FSD compatibility
  • Enhanced eye-tracking allows functionality with sunglasses
  • Implementation of end-to-end neural networks for highway driving

FSD v13 and Enhanced Autonomy

For October, it will see the release of FSD v13, bringing significant advancements:

  • Around six times improvement in miles between necessary interventions compared to earlier versions
  • New autonomous capabilities including unparking, parking, and reversing in FSD mode

Q1 2025: Global Expansion Plans

Tesla is targeting an expansion of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology to new markets in early 2025, contingent upon regulatory approval. The company plans to roll out the FSD system in Europe, marking a significant step in its international expansion. In addition, Tesla anticipates launching FSD in China, further broadening its global reach.

CEO Elon Musk added that right-hand drive (RHD) markets, such as the United Kingdom (UK) and Australia, could see FSD launch in late Q1 or early Q2 2025, also pending regulatory approval.

Implications and Challenges

While the roadmap is ambitious and exciting for Tesla enthusiasts and the autonomous driving industry, it raises several questions. One key challenge is regulatory approval. The global expansion of Full Self-Driving (FSD), particularly in regions like Europe and China, is heavily dependent on local regulatory frameworks. Tesla’s timeline may encounter delays as it navigates the complex regulatory landscapes in these areas.

In addition, the technical challenges associated with improving intervention-free miles are significant. Achieving these goals will require Tesla to overcome a host of complex technical obstacles.

As Tesla pushes the boundaries of autonomous driving, the company will need to prove that its rapid advancements in self-driving technology do not endanger the safety of vehicles or passengers. Furthermore, hardware compatibility remains a question.

While Tesla aims to unify its AI3 and AI4 computers to ensure older EVs are not left behind, there are lingering concerns about the long-term compatibility of these hardware systems.

With Tesla’s bold roadmap, it could have far-reaching effects on the autonomous vehicle industry. These effects include accelerated competition among automakers in the self-driving space, potential influence on regulatory frameworks worldwide, and the increasing public interest and scrutiny of self-driving EVs.

As Tesla moves forward with this roadmap, the automotive landscape including industry observers, regulators, and buyers will be watching closely to see if the company can deliver on its promises and elevate to new heights through its autonomous driving technology.
