Tesla announced the launch of a new 7-seater configuration for its popular Model Y electric vehicle (EV) in Europe, offering enhanced versatility for families and larger groups. The expanded seating option is now available for order in several European countries, including Germany and the United Kingdom (UK).

Availability and Pricing

According to Tesla, the 7-seater option is exclusively available for the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive variant. In Germany, this configuration starts at €57,490 (around $62,604), a €2,500 (around $2,722) premium over the standard 5-seater model. UK customers can opt for the 7-seater at an additional cost of £2,500 (around $3,267), bringing the total price to £53,500 (around $69,917) for the Long Range AWD version.

Tesla has stated that deliveries of the new 7-seater Model Y to European customers are expected to begin this quarter, marking a significant expansion of the vehicle’s appeal in the region.

Interior Configuration and Features

The 7-seater Model Y adds two folding, forward-facing seats in the third row. Tesla has emphasized the ease of access to these seats, featuring convenient buttons on the second-row seat backrests that allow them to slide forward and fold down.

For passengers in the third row, Tesla has included two USB-C ports for charging devices and cup holders for added convenience. However, it’s worth noting that the third row is best suited for children and teenagers, though it can accommodate adults if necessary.

Cargo Space and Versatility

Despite incorporating additional seating, Tesla has successfully preserved an impressive cargo capacity in the Model Y. With all seven seats in use, the vehicle offers 363 liters of boot space. When the third-row seats are folded down, this capacity expands significantly to 753 liters, providing ample room for larger items.

For maximum storage, folding down both the second and third rows increases the available space to a remarkable 2,040 liters. Additionally, the Model Y features an unchanged 117-liter frunk (front trunk), further enhancing its versatility. This design enables flexible usage, making it easy for owners to adapt the interior space to suit their needs.

Production and Market Impact

The new 7-seater version will be built at Tesla’s Giga Berlin facility in Brandenburg, Germany. This local production is likely to streamline delivery times for European customers.

Industry observers note that this move by Tesla could strengthen the Model Y’s position in the competitive European electric SUV market, particularly among family-oriented buyers who require more seating capacity.

Global Context

It is worth noting that Tesla has offered the 7-seater configuration in other markets previously. In the United States (U.S.), for instance, the option is currently priced at $2,000. Recent reports also suggest that Tesla’s Giga Shanghai facility has begun producing 7-seater Model Y units for both domestic Chinese and European markets.

As Tesla continues to expand its product offerings and production capabilities globally, the introduction of the 7-seater Model Y in Europe represents another step in the company’s strategy to cater to diverse customer needs across different regions.
