With the Tesla Cybertruck turning heads in the EV market since its foundation, it has quickly established itself as one of the best-selling electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States (U.S.) EV market.

According to the latest data from S&P Global Mobility reported by Automotive News, the Tesla Cybertruck ranked as the fifth most registered EV in the U.S. in May 2024, with 3,907 units registered. Particularly, this arrives as noteworthy given that the Cybertruck only entered the EV market in November 2023 and is still in its limited edition Foundation Series phase, with prices surpassing $100,000.

Tesla Cybertruck’s rapid ascent places it alongside Tesla’s other top-selling EV models, the Model Y and Model 3, giving the company three spots in the top five EV registrations for the month.

Notably, the Cybertruck outpaced its competitors with registrations surpassing the combined total of the next two contenders. The Ford F-150 Lightning recorded 2,353 new registrations in May, while the Rivian R1T saw 1,237. The other electric pickups including the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV Pickup, registered 668 and 359 units, respectively.

Furthermore, the Tesla Cybertruck accounted for over 45% of the 8,524 registrations among the top five all-electric pickups in May. While the Ford F-150 Lightning still leads in year-to-date registrations through May with 13,443 units, the Cybertruck is quickly gaining ground with 7,879 units, despite its later market entry.

Tom Libby, associate director of industry analysis at S&P Global Mobility, expressed amazement at the Cybertruck’s success stating, “It’s surprising because the Cybertruck is such a unique, one-of-a-kind, unusual vehicle, really as far out of the mainstream as you can get.”

As more improvements are being lined up for the Cybertruck, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also confirmed that the EV model’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) version 12.5 will see self-driving capabilities in the inner city and highway driving.

With Tesla’s Cybertruck ramping up to potentially become the best-selling electric pickup in 2024, the company will see another addition in its EV lineup that can potentially become its top-seller as the EV market gradually gets used to Cybertruck’s presence.
