Juice, a California-based company, has developed a sophisticated system that uses AI and computer vision to streamline the charging process. According to Juice, the capabilities of this technology includes:

  • Automatically identify a user’s unique EV
  • Initiate charging sessions without manual input
  • Complete payments seamlessly, eliminating the need for physical payment devices or apps

Unlike existing solutions such as Plug & Charge or Autocharge, Juice’s technology does not require OEM integrations, making it compatible with all makes and models of EVs.

Widespread Implementation

Revel, headquartered in Brooklyn, has integrated Juice’s technology across its entire network of DC fast chargers in New York City. Currently, Revel operates 54 public DC fast chargers at three sites in Brooklyn and Queens. The company has ambitious expansion plans, aiming to quadruple its network by mid-2025. Upcoming projects include:

  • A 60-stall mega station in Maspeth, Queens
  • A 48-stall station near LaGuardia Airport
  • Its first downtown Manhattan charging station on Pier 36, set to open later this year

Benefits for Drivers and the Industry

This partnership offers several significant advantages. First, it enhances efficiency by reducing the time drivers need to spend at charging stations, allowing them to spend more time on the road.

In addition, the improved user experience provided by the seamless and intuitive system simplifies EV charging, making it as straightforward as possible for users.

Another notable benefit is the support for rideshare drivers. Through Revel’s collaboration with Uber, this technology is especially advantageous for the increasing number of rideshare drivers who are transitioning to EVs.

James Murfin, CEO & cofounder of Juice, emphasized the significance of this deployment stating, “This partnership demonstrates how EV charging can be as seamless as unlocking your phone with your face. Only experiences that are truly this easy will help the world move to sustainable transport at scale.”

Timing and Market Significance

With the introduction of this technology, it arrives to contribute to New York City’s EV landscape including its Green Rides Initiative that mandates all rideshare drivers transition to EVs by 2030.

As of now, over 10% of the rideshare industry has already converted to EVs. Moreover, Revel has seen a tenfold increase in charging utilization this year alone.

As Revel expands its charging network, including new sites in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, the partnership with Juice sets a new standard for EV charging infrastructure. As a result, the success of this deployment in New York City could pave the way for similar implementations in other urban areas.
