The Three-Row ELectric SUV Joins Updated IONIQ 5 In Expanding Hyundai’s EV Portfolio

Hyundai has officially announced plans to debut its first-ever three-row electric vehicle (EV) in SUV form later this year. The new model, which could be named either the IONIQ 7 or IONIQ 9, is set to join Hyundai’s 2025 lineup alongside an updated version of the popular IONIQ 5.
The upcoming three-row electric SUV is projected to share the E-GMP platform with its sister company’s EV model, the Kia EV9. As of now, specific details remain under wraps, but design-wise, the new SUV is likely to draw inspiration from the IONIQ Seven concept unveiled at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show.

According to Hyundai, alongside the three-row SUV, Hyundai will introduce an updated IONIQ 5 for the 2025 model year. Again, full details are yet to be revealed for the 2025 IONIQ 5 but is projected to see enhancements in specs and design tweaks.
With Hyundai hitting high numbers for the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 in Q2 2024, the introduction of a three-row electric SUV will capitalize on the growing demand for larger EVs in the U.S. market. It should be noted that Hyundai Motor America was recently under a lawsuit that alleges the company’s “multitiered scheme” to falsify sales reports and mislead the public on EV demand.

With production of the 2025 IONIQ 5 aimed to start at Hyundai’s new $7.6 billion EV plant in Georgia later this year, this move will be significant as it may qualify the EV model for the $7,500 federal tax credit under current regulations
As the EV industry sees Hyundai’s expansion of its lineup, the debut of its first electric three-row SUV and the updated IONIQ 5 will strengthen its position in the competitive EV market.
