General Motors (GM) has reported a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales for Q3 2024, positioning the company to potentially claim a double-digit share of the United States (U.S.) EV market.

GM’s Record-Breaking EV Sales

According to GM, the company delivered a record 32,195 EVs in the U.S. during Q3 2024, marking a 60% increase from the same period last year and a 46% rise from the previous quarter. This strong performance has boosted GM’s share of the U.S. EV market to 9.5%, up from 7.1% in Q2 and 6.5% in Q1 2024.

Rory Harvey, GM’s executive vice president of global markets, attributed this success to the company’s diverse EV lineup stating, “GM’s EV portfolio is growing faster than the market because we have an all-electric vehicle for just about everyone, no matter what they like to drive.”

Interestingly, GM reported that over 50% of its EV buyers in Q3 were new to the brand, indicating the company’s ability to attract customers from competitors and appeal to first-time EV buyers.

Despite the strong EV sales, GM’s total U.S. deliveries in Q3 slipped by 2% year-over-year, with 659,601 vehicles sold. This reflects broader industry trends of weakening overall auto sales amid high prices and interest rates.

Standout Performers

Several models contributed to GM’s impressive EV sales figures. The Chevrolet Equinox EV is emerging as the company’s best-selling EV, having sold 9,772 units in its first full quarter on the market. With a starting price of $35,000, which could potentially drop to $27,000 with tax credits, the Equinox EV has positioned itself as America’s most affordable EV, offering an impressive range of over 300 miles.

In addition, the Cadillac LYRIQ has also shown remarkable growth, with sales reaching 7,224 units, reflecting a 139.4% increase year-over-year. Notably, the Chevrolet Blazer EV is also gaining traction in the market, with 7,998 units sold. This model is further solidifying GM’s presence in the electric vehicle landscape.

GM’s Future Outlook

GM is set to expand its EV lineup further. The company is gearing up to expand its EV lineup significantly. The Chevrolet Silverado EV LT, a more affordable option, is scheduled to launch in Q4 2024. This addition aims to cater to a broader audience, enhancing GM’s presence in the electric truck segment.

Additionally, Cadillac is planning to introduce two exciting new electric models: the Escalade IQ and the VISTIQ, both set to debut later this year. These luxury EVs will further diversify GM’s offerings and attract a new generation of environmentally-conscious buyers.

By the end of 2024, GM has ambitious goals to have 10 EV models in its U.S. portfolio, positioning itself as the automaker with the largest selection of EVs in the country.

GM’s EV sales growth is particularly notable given the uneven EV market performance in early 2024, which saw Tesla’s sales decline. As GM approaches a double-digit market share, it appears to be closing the gap with rival Ford and positioning itself as a top contender in the U.S. EV market.

With GM’s strong Q3 2024 EV sales performance, it demonstrates the company’s successful execution with a diverse range of EVs now available across various price points and segments.

As GM continues to introduce new electric models and expand production, it will be interesting to see if GM can maintain this momentum and achieve its goal of market leadership in the EV sector.
