As Revealed At The Chery Global Innovation Conference 2024, Chery Aims To Boost Its EV Lineup And Introduce Plans For Solid-State Batteries By 2026

In a strategic move to bolster its electric vehicle (EV) capabilities, Chinese automaker Chery has announced the launch of its Kunpeng Battery Brand, offering a range of ultra-fast charging battery products.

As announced at the Chery Global Innovation Conference 2024 in Wuhu, Anhui Province in China, Chery’s Kunpeng Battery Brand will feature three main product lines: square lithium iron phosphate, square ternary, and large cylindrical ternary batteries. According to Chery, the standout feature of these batteries is their 6C ultra-fast charging capability, which allows them to add up to 400 km (around 248 miles) of range in just 5 minutes.
In addition, the square lithium iron phosphate batteries have an energy density of 120 Wh/kg to 160 Wh/kg and are targeted at EVs with a 200 km to 600 km range, as well as plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) with 100 km (around 62 miles) to 200 km (around 124 miles) of all-electric range.
Moreover, the square ternary batteries, with an energy density of 140 Wh/kg to 200 Wh/kg, are aimed at EVs with 600 km (around 372 miles) to 800 km (around 497 miles) of range and PHEVs/EREVs with 150 km (around 93 miles) to 300 km (around 186 miles) of all-electric range. The large cylindrical series supports EVs with 700 km (around 434 miles) to 1,200 km (around 745 miles) of range and PHEVs/EREVs with 150 km (around 93 miles) to 300 km (around 186 miles) of all-electric range.
Chery claims that the Kunpeng battery series can withstand over 3,000 charging cycles and has a multi-section energy-absorbing design that can provide rapid directional pressure relief in emergencies.
Alongside the Kunpeng battery announcement, Chery also revealed its plans to launch a solid-state battery in 2026. The company aims to achieve an energy density of 400 Wh/kg this year, increasing to 600 Wh/kg by 2025, with the first car application expected in 2026, followed by initial batch production in 2027. Chery claims this will give EVs a range of up to 1,500 km.
Chery’s EV sales have been on the rise, with the company reporting over 60,000 new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in September 2024, out of a total of 244,534 units. The company’s chairman, Yin Tongyue, expects Chery to reach 80,000 NEV sales this month and 100,000 by the end of the year.
With the introduction of the Kunpeng battery lineup and its solid-state battery plans, Chery is positioning itself as a leader in the development of advanced battery technologies, aiming to provide its customers with longer-range and faster-charging EVs.
