BMW’s Heart Of Joy ECU Enhances Performance And Efficiency With 10x Faster Processing In Neue Klasse EVs
BMW has introduced a new advancement in electric vehicle (EV) technology with its new “Heart of Joy” control unit, a sophisticated system that promises to transform the driving experience in the company’s upcoming Neue Klasse EVs.
In detail, the technology was recently showcased in the BMW Vision Driving Experience test vehicle at the BMW Performance Driving Center in Spartanburg, United States (U.S.). The Heart of Joy conveys a fundamental reimagining of how EVs operate by integrating multiple critical systems into a single, highly efficient control unit. This innovative system blends drivetrain management, braking, charging, recuperation, and steering functions, processing information ten times faster than previous systems. Also, the integration enables unprecedented precision in vehicle control and energy management, leading to improvements in both performance and efficiency.
One of the most notable achievements of the Heart of Joy system is its ability to handle extreme power outputs while maintaining precise control. The test vehicle shows this capability by managing an outstanding 18,000 Newton meters (13,269 lb-ft) of torque—a deliberate engineering choice to ensure the system can easily handle the demands of everyday driving. This extraordinary power management is complemented by an advanced energy recuperation system that has transformed how EVs brake.
Moreover, this regenerative braking system is so effective that BMW claims 98% of normal driving scenarios require no input from the conventional friction brakes, contributing to a potential 25% increase in overall efficiency.
Frank Weber, BMW’s Development Board Member, explains the significance of this advancement stating, “The Heart of Joy enables us to take driving pleasure not just to the next level, but another one beyond that. We are further increasing efficiency, and therefore boosting range, as in future the driver will brake almost exclusively using energy regeneration.”
To demonstrate the system’s operation, BMW has equipped the Vision Driving Experience vehicle with illuminated wheel rims that provide visual feedback through color coding: green indicates acceleration, blue shows energy recuperation, and orange signals the rare engagement of friction brakes. This visual demonstration helps illustrate the seamless integration of the vehicle’s various systems.
The Heart of Joy is part of a larger technological evolution within BMW’s vehicle architecture. It represents one of four “super brains” or high-performance computers that will control future BMW models. The additional units will manage automated driving features, infotainment systems, and basic vehicle functions such as climate control and lighting. All of these systems have been developed entirely in-house by BMW, leveraging the company’s century of experience in driving dynamics.
While the Vision Driving Experience vehicle that showcases this technology will not enter production, the Heart of Joy control unit itself will be implemented in BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse EVs. The first model featuring this technology will begin production later this year at BMW’s Plant Debrecen in Hungary, marking the beginning of a new era in EV performance and efficiency.
