BMW is taking a groundbreaking approach to the development of its first dedicated electric M car, revealing that the upcoming M3 electric vehicle (EV) will feature a synthesized engine sound designed to replicate the emotional experience of its iconic straight-six gasoline engines.

In the latest episode of BMW’s documentary series chronicling the electric M3’s development, the company offered a first listen to the vehicle’s artificial sound signature. Unlike the futuristic Hans Zimmer-created soundscapes currently featured in BMW’s EVs, the new M3 will pipe in synthesized engine notes that closely mimic the distinctive growl of BMW’s S58 engine. This decision reflects BMW’s understanding that sound plays a crucial role in both driver engagement and safety.

Stefan Erler, head of user experience and drivability powertrain at BMW M, explains that vehicle sound serves multiple purposes beyond pure aesthetics. The auditory feedback helps drivers gauge their speed without looking at the speedometer, which is particularly important during performance driving scenarios like track sessions. This practical consideration demonstrates how BMW is thoughtfully translating traditional performance car elements into the electric era.

Extreme Testing for the Electric M3

The vehicle, currently being developed under the codename “Nadine,” is undergoing extensive testing in challenging conditions, including winter trials in Sweden. These tests focus on perfecting the car’s handling characteristics, particularly in low-grip situations where M cars are known for their controlled playfulness. The prototype, while wearing an i4 body, actually houses the advanced Neue Klasse platform that will underpin BMW’s future EVs.

When it launches around 2027, the electric M3 is expected to feature a sophisticated quad-motor powertrain producing at least 700 horsepower. This setup, with individual motors powering each wheel, will enable precise torque vectoring for optimized handling. The vehicle will also incorporate BMW’s sixth-generation battery technology, utilizing cylindrical cells that promise a 30% increase in range compared to current BMW EVs.

Frank van Meel, BMW M’s CEO, has confirmed that the company is even considering incorporating simulated gear shifts to enhance driver feedback during track driving. This approach, similar to that employed by Hyundai in its Ioniq 5 N, suggests that performance car manufacturers are finding innovative ways to preserve traditional driving experiences in EVs.
