The Collaboration Aims To Improve EV Battery Production Efficiency And Performance Using AI, While Fostering Talent Development
In the realm of electric vehicle (EV) production, BMW Group has announced a collaboration with the University of Zagreb, aimed at revolutionizing battery cell production through the application of artificial intelligence (AI).
According to BMW, BMW’s Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC) and the University of Zagreb’s Regional Center of Excellence for Robotic Technology (CRTA) are in a joint effort to optimize manufacturing processes for enhanced performance, quality, and cost-efficiency.
At the heart of this collaboration is the development of AI models that can analyze and interpret vast amounts of production data. Doctoral candidates and students from the University of Zagreb are tasked with collecting and structuring existing production data, which will then be used to create AI models capable of recognizing patterns and making predictive improvements in the manufacturing process.
Zdenko Tonković, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at the University of Zagreb, highlighted the mutual benefits of this partnership stating, “As a university, we offer the BMW Group access to the latest research results and innovative ideas, while our students benefit from the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.”
The collaboration leverages BMW’s extensive expertise in battery cell technology, centered in its competence centers in Munich and Parsdorf. The BCCC in Munich focuses on developing and small-scale production of next-generation high-voltage battery cells, while the Cell Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC) in Parsdorf works on scaling these innovations for broader production.
Moritz Poremba, Head of Battery Cell Recycling Technology Development at BMW Group, emphasized the project’s role in talent development. “Through this joint project, we inspire students for the BMW Group and the innovative work in our battery cell competence centers,” he explained. “Of course, we also hope to attract young talents to our company.”
BMW has been making several innovations in EV technology production with the recent celebration of ten years of manufacturing electric powertrain components in its Component Plant 02.20 in Dingolfing, Germany. As a result, BMW’s efforts in reaching new heights in its EV production is noted.
