Volkswagen AG is set to transform the in-car experience for drivers and passengers alike with the introduction of the AirConsole gaming platform in select electric vehicle (EV) models, aiming to bring an immersive gaming experience to Volkswagen’s lineup.

In details of the partnership with AirConsole, the company’s platform will be available in several Volkswagen models starting this fall including its EV lineup including the new ID.7 Tourer and other ID. models such as the ID.5, ID.4, and ID.3.

Moreover, AirConsole will gamify the EV’s infotainment as its display becomes a gaming console, while passengers use their smartphones as controllers. This innovative setup allows for multiplayer gaming experiences, with both front and rear passengers able to participate in the gamification experience.

To start gaming, users simply need to launch the AirConsole app on the vehicle’s Active Info Display and scan a QR code with their smartphones to connect. The system supports multiple players simultaneously, making it a social and interactive experience for all occupants.

Volkswagen plans to roll out AirConsole in European markets beginning mid-September, with further expansion and additional games planned by the end of 2024. Notably, the gaming feature will only be accessible when the EV is in park mode for safety.

Volkswagen’s latest strategic move follows a growing trend in the automotive industry to incorporate gaming into vehicles. Other automakers, such as BMW, have already integrated AirConsole into their models, while Tesla had previously offered access to Steam in some of its EVs.
