Tesla’s plan for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) program has expanded into new grounds, especially in the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market as the company’s program has reached tentative approval from Chinese authorities.

Baidu’s Assistance

Notably, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk made a visit to China during the Beijing Auto Show, where further talks led to the company securing a deal to get Chinese authorities’ approval for its FSD program to launch in China according to Bloomberg. Musk had met with highly rank Chinese authorities including Premier Li Qiang and even met with the chairman of CATL Robin Zeng during these talks. In terms of concerns of mapping and navigation, Tesla will work with Chinese technology company Baidu to mitigate the potential data security and privacy risks of its FSD.

Tesla’s FSD Investment

Previously in Tesla’s Q1 2024 earnings call, Musk expressed interest in rolling out the company’s FSD program in different countries and adapting it to different diverse markets. With that in mind, the potential launch of the FSD program into China’s major EV market will certainly put the company ahead. Results have already been shown as Tesla’s shares have increased by 13% after news of tentative approval of its FSD program in China.

Through Tesla’s strategy to elevate its FSD program, the company earlier reported that it is investing over $10 billion in training it through computing, gigantic data pipelines, and vast video storage. Moreover, the company’s endeavors to push its robotaxi plans that are powered by its FSD program will lead to new avenues now in the company’s future with its tentative approval in China.

Tesla’s New Opportunities In China

The tentative approval from Chinese authorities along with Baidu’s assistance for mapping and navigation services puts Tesla in a favorable position to deploy its FSD program in China and even open up to other markets in the world. With the groundwork laid for Tesla, the company’s expanding opportunities to lead in the sector of autonomous driving are seeing efforts.
