Tesla has broken ground on an ambitious new Supercharger project called ‘Oasis’ that promises to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the United States (U.S.).

In detail, the Supercharger station is located in Lost Hills, California, along the bustling Interstate 5 corridor between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the facility will become the world’s largest Supercharger station with 168 charging stalls.

According to Max de Zegher, Tesla’s head of charging, what sets Oasis apart from conventional charging stations is its unprecedented integration of renewable energy and storage systems. Spanning 30 acres, the facility will feature an 11-megawatt solar farm with both ground-mounted arrays and solar canopies, complemented by 10 Tesla Megapacks providing 39 megawatt-hours of energy storage capacity.

“We’re working in lockstep with the utility, but due to local substation upgrade timelines, we would not have been able to meet 2025 charging demand,” explained Max de Zegher. “Although we’re typically grid connected, in this case, we’re leveraging the full Tesla ecosystem and our vertical integration.”

A New Era for Tesla’s Supercharger Vision

The project represents a significant shift toward Tesla’s original vision for the Supercharger network. While the company had long promised to add solar arrays and batteries to its charging stations, with CEO Elon Musk suggesting most stations would eventually operate off-grid, only a handful of locations have previously featured their own power systems.

Oasis will initially operate with a minimal 1.5-megawatt grid connection, relying primarily on its solar and battery systems to meet changing demands. However, Tesla has built in the flexibility to double the station’s capacity as needed, with plans for future grid capacity expansion.

Moreover, there will be at least 12 pull-through stalls specifically designed to accommodate EV towing trailers, such as the Cybertruck. When completed in mid-2025, Oasis will surpass Tesla’s current largest charging stations along Interstate 5 – the 98-stall facilities at Firebaugh and Harris Ranch.

“When you stop by, you’ll be powered up by locally generated sunshine,” de Zegher noted, highlighting the project’s sustainability credentials. The station’s significant energy storage capacity ensures reliable charging even during nighttime hours or periods of limited sunlight.

Tesla’s Supercharger Expansion Plans

In addition, Tesla continues to expand its charging infrastructure across the country, with plans for an even larger 200-stall Supercharger station in Florida. The Oasis project, however, stands out for its comprehensive approach to sustainable charging, potentially setting a new standard for future charging infrastructure development.

With the Lost Hills location in California strategically serving as one of the busiest EV corridors in the country, it is positioned to play a vital role in supporting EV adoption while demonstrating the viability of large-scale, solar-powered charging infrastructure.
