Tesla has achieved a significant milestone in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with the installation of its 60,000th Supercharger stall worldwide.
According to Tesla, the 60,000th Supercharger stall was installed at the Enshu Morimachi station in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Notably, this location also marks Japan’s 600th Supercharger, highlighting Tesla’s commitment to expanding its charging infrastructure in key markets around the world.
Max de Zegher, Tesla’s Director of Charging, praised the strategic location of the new station, stating, “Great location with the fastest connection between Nagoya and Tokyo, accessible from both sides of the highway. The Japan team is awesome!”
The milestone installation in Japan also introduces the country’s first V4 Supercharger, Tesla’s latest charging technology. V4 Superchargers feature longer cables to accommodate a wider range of EVs and are designed for future upgrades to faster charging speeds, although they currently maintain the same 250kW peak power delivery as V3 Superchargers.
Tesla’s Supercharger network has experienced rapid expansion since its launch in 2012. By 2018, the network had reached 10,000 Supercharger stalls, which tripled to 30,000 by 2021. As of 2024, the network now boasts 60,000 stalls. This accelerated growth is a direct response to the rising number of EVs on the road, particularly following the success of Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y.
In addition to its expansion, Tesla’s Supercharger network is seeing increasing utilization. Recent data shows that 1.4 terawatt-hours of electricity were delivered through the network in the last quarter alone. This highlights the growing significance of EV charging as a core part of Tesla’s business, reflecting the company’s role in meeting the demands of a rapidly electrifying transportation landscape.
Despite recent setbacks, including CEO Elon Musk’s decision to temporarily disband Tesla’s charging team, the Supercharger network continues to grow. The company is focused on improving both the speed and accessibility of its charging infrastructure.
Tesla’s decision to open its network to non-Tesla EVs and the adoption of its North American Charging Standard (NACS) by other automakers are set to further expand the network’s reach and impact.
To celebrate these achievements, Tesla has installed special Supercharger stalls at the Enshu Morimachi location. In detail, the 600th Japanese Supercharger features a faceplate adorned with origami prints, and the 60,000th global Supercharger sports a sleek, silver faceplate.
As a result, these commemorative stalls stand as some of the most aesthetically pleasing Superchargers worldwide, marking important milestones in Tesla’s charging infrastructure development.
As Tesla continues its global expansion and the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, the Supercharger network remains a critical component of the EV ecosystem. With 60,000 stalls now deployed and plans for continued growth, Tesla’s charging infrastructure is set to play an increasingly important role in supporting the widespread adoption of EVs.
