Scout Motors, a Volkswagen Group sub-brand, has made a bold return to the American automotive landscape with the unveiling of two production-intent concept vehicles: the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck.

Based on Scout Motors presentation at the reveal event at Nashville, Tennessee, both EVs combine traditional rugged capability with modern electric powertrains, offering buyers the choice between fully electric models with up to 350 miles of range or range-extended variants capable of exceeding 500 miles through an innovative gas-powered generator system dubbed “Harvester.”

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Terra pickup truck comes with a projected towing capacity exceeding 10,000 pounds, while the Traveler SUV can handle more than 7,000 pounds. Both models share a nearly 2,000-pound payload capacity and canaccelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as quick as 3.5 seconds, thanks to electric motors producing nearly 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

“Two years in the making, the day has finally come to share the next generation of Scout vehicles with the world,” stated Scott Keogh, President and CEO of Scout Motors. “The original core idea — rugged, versatile vehicles capable of off-road adventure and family duty — is more relevant than ever.”

Robust Off-Road Design

Built on a proprietary body-on-frame platform with a solid rear axle, both EVs feature serious off-road credentials, they are designed to tackle challenging terrains and are equipped with impressive specifications.

Moreover, these EV can accommodate 35-inch tires, providing superior traction and stability. They also contains over one foot of ground clearance, allowing for better navigation over obstacles.

Water Fording Capability

In addition, they have nearly three feet of water fording capability, enabling them to traverse through deep water without risking damage. To further enhance their off-road performance, they come equipped with a front sway bar disconnect and front and rear mechanical lockers, which optimize their traction and maneuverability on rough terrain.

Modern EV Features

The EV’s modern features include 800V architecture supporting charging rates up to 350kW, bi-directional charging capabilities, and over-the-air software updates. The Terra comes equipped with a 5.5-foot pickup bed featuring multiple power outlets, while the Traveler offers a split tailgate design for improved cargo access.

For the interior, both models showcase what Scout calls a “simple and bold, tactile, and fit for purpose” design philosophy, with interiors that pay homage to the original Scout II through features like the instrument panel’s upper brow with a deep undercut. Both vehicles offer ample storage, including a front trunk large enough for golf clubs, a gym bag, and a small cooler.

Direct-to-Consumer Sales Strategy

Scout Motors plans to sell directly to consumers through “Scout Workshops,” which will provide test drives and service support. The company notes that 80% of repairs can be completed outside of these facilities, either in customers’ driveways or in the field.

Pricing starts below $60,000 for both models, with entry-level versions potentially starting as low as $50,000 after available incentives. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027 at a new facility in South Carolina, which is expected to create over 4,000 American jobs.

A New Chapter for Scout Motors

With pre-orders for both the Traveler and Terra now opened, this marks the beginning of a new chapter for this storied American brand under Volkswagen Group’s stewardship for Scout Motors.
