Samsung Electronics announced a new expansion of its Digital Key technology, bringing smartphone-based vehicle access to select Volvo and Polestar electric vehicles (EVs), where this integration is a step forward in the convergence of mobile technology and automotive accessibility, allowing owners to manage their vehicles directly from their Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

Regional Availability of Digital Key

The technology rollout, beginning this month, will initially support two premium EVs: the Volvo EX90 and the Polestar 3. The Digital Key functionality will be available across multiple regions, with the Volvo EX90 receiving support in North America, Europe, Latin America, and select Asian markets, while the Polestar 3 will gain the feature in North America, Europe, and specific Asian territories including Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Three Wireless Technologies for Access

In detail, the system leverages three distinct wireless technologies to provide flexible access options. Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology enables hands-free access to the vehicle, while Near Field Communication (NFC) allows for a simple tap-to-unlock and start functionality. Additionally, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) provides remote control capabilities through the Samsung Wallet app.

Woncheol Chai, EVP and Head of the Digital Wallet Team at Samsung Electronics emphasized the company’s commitment to connected experiences, stating, “Expanding Samsung Digital Key access is an important part of our commitment to offering connected, secure experiences within the Galaxy ecosystem.”

EAL6+ Certification and Key Sharing Features

In addition, the Digital Key system has achieved EAL6+ certification, the highest security standard for smart devices. The technology is protected within Samsung Wallet, which requires biometric or PIN authentication for access. In the event of a lost or stolen device, owners can remotely lock or delete their Digital Key through Samsung’s Find service, providing an additional layer of security.

The feature is compatible with a wide range of Samsung devices, including the Galaxy S20 series and newer models, the Note 20 series, and foldable devices from the Z Fold2 and Z Flip 5G onwards. One particularly useful aspect of the technology is its sharing capability, allowing vehicle owners to securely share digital keys with family members or friends who need access to the vehicle.

Expanding Digital Key Partnerships

Notably, this expansion builds upon Samsung’s existing Digital Key partnerships with other automotive manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, Mini, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. The technology, which launched in 2022 as part of Samsung Wallet, represents a growing trend toward digital vehicle access solutions in the automotive industry.

While the Digital Key provides essential functions like locking, unlocking, and starting the vehicle, it should be noted that certain remote features, such as climate preconditioning and remote locking/unlocking from a distance, still require the manufacturer’s dedicated smartphone app. This distinction helps users understand the complementary nature of these digital solutions in the modern driving experience.

As vehicles become increasingly connected and electrified, this integration between Samsung’s mobile technology and premium EVs from Volvo and Polestar showcases the ongoing evolution of automotive convenience features.
