Renault revealed its Twingo E-Tech electric prototype at the Paris Motor Show 2024, where this new electric vehicle (EV) iteration of the beloved Twingo is set to hit the market in 2026. 

The Twingo E-Tech Electric prototype pays homage to its iconic predecessor from 1992 while incorporating futuristic elements. Retaining the rounded shapes that made the original Twingo so recognizable, the prototype features several contemporary updates. 

According to Renault, notable design elements include LED headlamps encased in floating rings and it appears capable to ‘wink’ when one of the rounded headlamps turns off, which add a modern flair. A fixed glass roof enhances the EV’s interior, flooding it with natural light and creating an airy atmosphere.

Additionally, the prototype contains five doors for improved practicality, making it more accessible for passengers. Protruding taillights mirror the headlamp design, while illuminated round door handles serve as a nostalgic nod to the original model.

Renault has set ambitious goals with its pricing strategy, aiming to make the Twingo E-Tech the most affordable EV made in Europe. To achieve this, the company is implementing several cost-cutting measures. One significant improvement is the reduced production time, with the new Twingo expected to be assembled in “much less than 10 hours,” a marked decrease from the 14 hours required for the current Renault Clio. 

Additionally, the Twingo will utilize an adapted version of the AmpR Small platform, which is also employed in the Renault 5 and 4 E-Tech Electric models. This platform sharing allows for greater efficiency in manufacturing.

Moreover, 70% of the parts will be common with the Renault 5, further driving down costs. To expedite the design process, Renault has partnered with an unnamed Chinese company, successfully cutting the development time to just two years. Although there will be Chinese collaboration in design, production will take place at Renault’s plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, with an impressive annual capacity of 150,000 units.

While detailed technical specifications have yet to be released, the prototype showcases several impressive features. It is designed with an all-electric powertrain optimized for city driving, providing a practical solution for urban environments. The compact footprint enhances urban agility, making it easier to navigate tight spaces. Its monovolume silhouette, complemented by the fixed glass roof, adds to the overall aesthetic appeal.

The Twingo E-Tech also features a modern, liquid-like surface treatment, giving it a sleek and contemporary look. High-tech touches include a screen on the bonnet that displays an animated logo, emphasizing the vehicle’s modernity and innovative spirit. Overall, the Twingo E-Tech Electric promises to combine nostalgic design elements with cutting-edge technology, appealing to a wide range of buyers.

The Twingo E-Tech aims to fill a crucial gap in the European EV market by promising to deliver affordable electric mobility with a price tag under €20,000 (around $21,876). Currently, only Chinese-made models like the Leapmotor T03 are available under €20,000. Renault’s offering will compete with slightly pricier European models such as the electric Fiat Grande Panda at €24,900 (around $27,236) and Citroën e-C3 at €23,900 (around $26,142).

As part of Renault’s expanding electric lineup, which includes the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, Renault 4 E-Tech Electric, Megane E-Tech Electric, and Scenic E-Tech Electric, the new Twingo represents a significant step in the company’s electrification strategy.
