Renault has taken the wraps off its latest electric vehicle (EV) at the Paris Auto Show 2024: the Renault 4 E-Tech, a modern reinterpretation of the brand’s iconic 1960s Renault 4L hatchback, set to hit dealerships next year.

Affordable Electric Mobility

Renault is expected to position the R4 E-Tech with a targeted price tag of under €35,000. This pricing strategy places it slightly above the upcoming Renault 5, which starts at around €25,000, making both models attractive options for budget-conscious consumers looking to make the switch to electric.

Performance and Range

According to Renault, the R4 E-Tech will be offered in two distinct configurations to cater to varying customer needs. The entry-level model features a 90kW electric motor with 225Nm of torque, paired with a 40kWh battery that provides a range of around 300 km.

In contrast, the top-of-the-line version boasts a more powerful 110kW front electric motor generating 245Nm of torque, a larger 52kWh battery, and an impressive WLTP range of 400 km. This model also reaches a top speed of 150 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.5 seconds.

Design and Versatility

Renault has designed the new R4 E-Tech to capture the spirit of the original R4, celebrated for its versatility and broad appeal. The vehicle features a bold, retro-futuristic design that sets it apart. Notable attributes include an opening canvas roof called “Plein Sud,” a spacious and modular interior, and 420 liters of boot space.

In addition, the rear bench seat can be folded down, and the front passenger seat also flat-folds to maximize cargo space. Moreover, the increased ground clearance enhances its light off-road capability, complemented by an Advanced Extended Grip traction control system.

Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of the Renault brand, emphasized the EV’s versatility stating, “It’s a mainstream electric car in tune with its times, with a host of useful technologies for driving and comfort.”

Technology and Connectivity

The R4 E-Tech is equipped with modern technology aimed at enhancing the driving experience. It features the OpenR Link infotainment system, which includes Reno, the official Renault avatar designed to improve user interaction. Moreover, advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are integrated to enhance safety, while the One Pedal driving function simplifies urban maneuvering, making it more intuitive for city driving.

Market Context and Strategy

The unveiling of the R4 E-Tech comes at a pivotal moment for the European auto industry. Automakers are increasingly focusing on affordably priced battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to stimulate EV demand. At the same time, Chinese competitors are expanding their presence in the European market, intensifying the competitive landscape.

In addition, subsidy cuts are putting pressure on manufacturers to maintain competitive pricing. Thierry Koskas, an executive at Stellantis’s Citroen brand, suggested that the industry might be approaching a “tipping point” for EV demand, highlighting the urgency for automakers to adapt and innovate in response to changing market conditions.

The R4 E-Tech shares more than two-thirds of its parts with the Renault 5, including the AmpR Small platform. This strategy allows Renault to achieve significant economies of scale without compromising on features or performance.

A Nod to History

The original Renault 4, launched in 1961, was a revolutionary product that sold over 8 million units across five continents during its 30-year production run. The new R4 E-Tech aims to capture that same spirit of innovation and accessibility, this time for the electric age.
