Porsche has achieved a remarkable feat with its Taycan Turbo GT electric vehicle (EV), setting a new lap record at the Shanghai International Circuit and completing a trio of record-breaking performances across three continents.

According to Porsche, development driver Lars Kern piloted the electric sedan to a time of 2:11.28 minutes on the 5.4-km Formula 1 track, marking the first officially recognized lap record at the circuit.

The achievement in Shanghai follows earlier records set at Germany’s Nürburgring-Nordschleife and California’s Laguna Seca, demonstrating the vehicle’s exceptional performance capabilities across diverse racing environments.

Despite challenging weather conditions, with intermittent rain leaving the track slightly damp, Kern managed to push the vehicle to its limits, reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h at the circuit’s fastest point.

“Every racetrack has its own unique challenges,” stated Kevin Giek, Head of the Taycan model series at Porsche. “In order to show how complete the overall package for the Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package is, we set out to break records on three very different courses around the world.”

The record-setting Taycan Turbo GT, introduced in spring 2024, includes an 815 kW power output in overboost mode and up to 1,340 Nm of torque. The EV can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 2.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 305 kph. The Weissach package version features additional weight-saving measures, including the removal of rear seats, making it particularly suited for track performance.

For the record attempt, the EV was equipped with safety features including a roll cage and racing bucket seat, along with optional Pirelli Trofeo RS tires. The EV’s sophisticated drivetrain and attack mode, which provides an additional 120 kW of power for 10-second bursts, proved crucial in achieving the record time.

Significance of the Shanghai Record

The choice of Shanghai International Circuit for this final record attempt holds special significance, as Porsche operates one of its Experience Centres on the circuit grounds, highlighting the strong partnership between the German manufacturer and Chinese motorsport authorities.

Versatility Across Global Racing Circuits

As a result, this latest achievement not only sets a new benchmark for EV performance but also demonstrates the Taycan Turbo GT’s versatility across different racing environments, from the technical challenges of the Nürburgring to the unique demands of Shanghai’s “snail curve” complex.
