As automakers are starting to transition to electric vehicles (EVs) with their lineup, Porsche is ramping up its EV shift as it prepares to discontinue several of its popular gas-powered models by 2026.

According to Porsche board member Albrecht Reimold told Automobilwochemagazine, the production of the gas-powered Macan SUV will cease by 2026 while the combustion engine versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman sports cars will end production in 2025. These decisions arrive as Porsche introduces and updates key model in its EV product plan.

As of now, the EV transition is already underway in Europe, where the fossil-fuel Macan has been dropped from Porsche’s lineup. However, sales continue in markets where it remains a bestseller including the United States (U.S.) market. Although Reimold emphasized that the current platforms have reached the end of their planned life cycles.

Moreover, Porsche EV plans are taking shape with several new models on the horizon. Notably, the Macan EV is set to arrive in the U.S. this fall and will be the company’s first EV on the new PPE (Premium Platform Electric) architecture.

Upcoming Porsche EVs

Following the Macan EV, Porsche plans to launch electrified versions of the 718 sports model by late 2025. These models may possess a centrally-located battery pack for optimal weight distribution, similar to Porsche’s Mission R concept according to Motor Authority.

Furthermore, Porsche is also developing an electrified Cayenne, projected to debut in 2026. The electrified Cayenne will utilize Porsche’s own battery cells produced in Slovakia. In addition, a range-topping seven-seater EV, known as “SUV K1,” is in the works to round out Porsche’s model range.

Despite the hurdles presented in EV demand in some markets, Porsche remains focused on its electrification strategy. As the company accelerates its shift to EVs, the comprehensive approach highlights its commitment to EVs.
