NIO has officially launched its ONVO L60 electric vehicle (EV). Unveiled on September 19, 2024, in China, the ONVO L60 is positioned as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model Y, with prices starting at 149,900 yuan ($21,200) for the battery subscription model.

According to ONVO, the ONVO L60 is available in several configurations, including a Battery as a Service (BaaS) model priced at 149,900 yuan ($21,200), a version with a 60 kWh battery for 206,900 yuan ($29,250), and an 85 kWh battery model costing 235,900 yuan ($33,350).

These prices undercut the Tesla Model Y, which starts at 249,900 yuan ($35,280) in China, by a significant margin. The most expensive ONVO L60 is still 5.6% cheaper than the base Model Y, while the BaaS version is 40% less expensive.

The 60 kWh battery model offers a CLTC range of up to 555 km (341 miles), while the 85 kWh version extends this to 730 km (454 miles). NIO also announced plans for a future 1,000 km (621-mile) range model with an expected 150 kWh battery pack.

Designed by former Bentley designer Raul Pires, the ONVO L60 arrives with a sleek exterior with a drag coefficient of 0.229, slightly better than the Model Y’s 0.236. This contributes to impressive energy consumption figures of 12.1 kWh/100km for the single-motor version and 12.7 kWh/100km for the dual-motor variant.

The L60 is slightly larger than the Model Y, measuring 4,828 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,616 mm tall. Its 2,950 mm wheelbase offers more interior space than its Tesla counterpart.

The base model features a rear-axle 240 kW electric motor capable of 305 Nm torque and a top speed of 200 km/h. The dual-motor version adds a 100 kW motor to the front axle, increasing the top speed to 203 km/h and achieving 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.6 seconds.

The ONVO L60’s interior design comes in a minimalist style while incorporating several distinctive features that set it apart. At the center of the dashboard is a large 17.3-inch horizontal 3K infotainment screen, delivering a 91.5% screen-to-body ratio for a sleek, modern look.

In addition to the main display, the vehicle includes a 13-inch head-up display for easy access to important driving information, along with an 8-inch entertainment screen for rear passengers. The sound system is another highlight, featuring 18 speakers and 1020W of power with Dolby Atmos support for a premium audio experience.

Powering the vehicle’s technology is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chipset, offering 60 TOPS of AI computing power to enhance the overall user experience. One standout feature is the optional 52-liter Midea refrigerator that can be installed under the trunk floor.

Moreover, the ONVO L60 uses a vision-based smart driving system called OSD (ONVO Smart Driving), powered by an Nvidia Orin X chip. It includes features like NOA (Navigation on Autopilot) claimed to work on 99.9% of roads, and driverless parking capabilities.

With its competitive pricing, advanced features, and performance specifications, the ONVO L60 is positioned to be a strong challenger in the electric SUV market. NIO’s strategy of offering both outright purchase and battery subscription models provides flexibility for buyers. Deliveries are scheduled to start on September 28.
