Nissan has announced plans to introduce affordable bi-directional charging technology on selected electric vehicles (EVs) starting in 2026. This innovative Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) system will allow EV owners to not only power their homes using their EV’s battery but also sell excess electricity back to the grid.

According to Nissan, the company’s V2G technology represents a significant step towards creating a sustainable energy ecosystem. By enabling EVs to serve as mobile energy storage units, the system aims to reduce energy costs for EV owners by up to 50% per year and lower net CO2 emissions by approximately 30% annually for the average United Kingdom (UK) household. The system also aims to support the integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid and decrease dependency on fossil fuels.

Hugues Desmarchelier, Vice President of Nissan’s global electrification ecosystem & EV programs, emphasized the transformative potential of this technology stating, “This is a potential game-changer for how we think of EVs. Not just as a means of getting from A to B, but as a mobile energy storage unit that can save people money and support the transition from fossil fuels, bringing us closer to a carbon-free future.”

The V2G technology will initially be launched in the UK before expanding to other European markets. Nissan has already achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first automotive company to obtain G99 Grid code certification for an AC-based solution in the UK, following a successful year-long trial at the University of Nottingham.

Furthermore, this certification allows Nissan to supply electricity directly into the UK national energy grid, paving the way for a more integrated and flexible energy system.

Affordable and Accessible Technology

Nissan aims to make V2G technology accessible to a broader range of consumers by offering its AC bi-directional charger at a price comparable to current mono-directional chargers. This approach could significantly lower the entry cost for consumers interested in adopting this innovative energy solution. The system will be complemented by a dedicated app, giving users full control and flexibility over their energy usage.

Part of a Larger Vision

The introduction of V2G technology aligns with Nissan’s broader strategic goals outlined in its business plan, “The Arc,” and its long-term vision, “Ambition 2030.” These initiatives focus on delivering innovations that support the EV transition while creating a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.

Guillaume Cartier, Nissan’s Chairperson, shared the company’s vision stating, “We’re working towards an energy-secure future where the power in our cars comes from the car on our driveway, not the power station.”

Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans

Nissan’s V2G project has benefited from strong partnerships, including support from the UK Government’s Advanced Propulsion Centre and collaborations with companies like Dreev and Enovates. These partnerships have been crucial in developing the technology and achieving grid certification.

As Nissan continues to expand its V2G initiative, the company plans to seek grid certification in additional markets and make this innovative energy solution available to more buyers across Europe.
