Mazda has made a bold move in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its new EZ-6 EV in China as it officially opened pre-orders for both fully electric (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) versions of the model.

According to Changan Mazda, the EZ-6 model comes with a surprisingly affordable starting price of just 160,000 yuan (around $22,800). This competitive pricing strategy puts the EZ-6 in a strong position to capture a strong share of the growing Chinese EV market.

Co-developed with Chinese state-owned Changan Auto, the EZ-6 is one of two new electric offerings from Mazda that debuted in April. While its crossover sibling, the Arata, is still developing, Mazda has lived up to its promise of bringing the EZ-6 to market before year’s end. The launch includes four EREV versions and three BEV versions, with prices ranging up to 200,000 yuan ($28,550).

Design and Features

The EZ-6’s exterior design strikes a balance between Mazda’s signature styling and futuristic elements. The front features a Mazda-like grille and split headlights, with the main lamps tucked beneath the daytime running lights in what Mazda calls the “Wings of Light.” A sporty coupe-like silhouette is enhanced by an automatic rear ducktail spoiler that activates at speeds above 90 km/h, improving aerodynamics.

Despite its affordable price point, the EZ-6 does not skimp on luxury features. Even the base model comes equipped with leather seating, while higher trims offer a combination of leather and suede upholstery. As for the interior, it arrives with a 14-speaker Sony audio system, 64-color ambient lighting, and “zero-gravity” front seats that can recline to a near-flat position. A panoramic glass roof adds to the premium feel of the cabin.

In terms of dimensions, the EZ-6 measures 4,921 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,485 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,895 mm. This makes it slightly larger than the Deepal SL03 and L07 sedans with which it shares a platform, providing ample interior space for passengers.

Mazda EZ-6’s BEV Model

The BEV version of the EZ-6 is powered by a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle, producing 190 kW (254 horsepower) of power. Buyers can choose between two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options: a 56.1 kWh pack offering a CLTC range of 480 km (around 298 miles), or a larger 68.8 kWh pack good for 600 km (around 372 miles). Both versions have a top speed of 170 km/h (105 mph) and can fast-charge from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes.

Mazda EZ-6’s EREV Model

For the EREV version, it combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine acting as a generator with a 160 kW (215 hp) electric motor. This setup provides an electric-only range of either 130 km (around 80 miles) or 200 km (around 124 miles), depending on the battery pack, with a total range of up to 1,301 km (around 808 miles). The EREV can charge from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes at a DC fast-charging station.

Inside the cabin, drivers will find a conventional instrument panel alongside a 14.6-inch infotainment screen. A 50-inch augmented reality heads-up display projects essential information onto the windshield. The EZ-6 also features a stalk-mounted drive selector on the steering column, freeing up space on the center console for storage, including room for two phones (though only the driver-side space supports wireless charging).

While the EZ-6 claims to have L2.5 driving assistance, it appears to function primarily as an intelligent cruise control system. The vehicle’s technology is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset, ensuring the smooth operation of its various features.

Market Implications

Currently, the Mazda EZ-6 is exclusive to the Chinese market. However, given the excitement surrounding this launch and Mazda’s global presence, it is suggested that the company may bring this new EV to other markets in the future with the European market in mind. It will be interesting to see how this model performs and whether it will indeed make its way to other countries in the coming years.

With the combination of affordable pricing, luxury features, and extended range options, these aspects position the EZ-6 as a strong competitor in the electric sedan segment, potentially paving the way for Mazda’s expanded presence in the global EV market.
