Mazda has officially announced its entry into the global electric vehicle (EV) market with the confirmation of its first all-electric sedan, the MAZDA EZ-6.

Set to debut in the fall of 2024, the EZ-6 will initially target Chinese and European markets, marking a new milestone in Mazda’s EV strategy. With the EZ-6, it rolled off the assembly line in July at Changan Mazda, which is the company’s joint venture in China.

According to Mazda, the EZ-6 delivers technological features including Level 2.5 autonomous driving assistance, a 7nm Qualcomm SA8155P chip, four high-definition panoramic cameras, and twelve high-performance ultrasonic radars. These advanced systems enable various intelligent driving scenarios such as autonomous parking and remote parking capabilities.

While official specifications have not been released, the EZ-6 is projected to offer a range of up to 600 km (372 miles) based on the CLTC standard. Mazda has emphasized that despite the shift to electric power, the EZ-6 will maintain the brand’s signature driving dynamics with experts from Mazda’s European R&D center conducting performance tuning at the Chongqing Automobile Testing Grounds in China.

Notably, the global debut of the EZ-6 took place at the Beijing International Auto Show in April, attended by both Mazda President Masahiro Moro and Changan Automobile Chairman Zhu Huairong, underscoring the importance of this model for both companies.

This strategic move arrives as Mazda seeks to reverse recent sales declines, with global sales down 0.5% and a more significant 31% drop in certain markets through June 2024. As Mazda’s first truly global EV sedan, the EZ-6 is seen as a potential successor to the popular Mazda 6. This launch signifies Mazda’s determination to compete in the rapidly evolving EV market and revitalize its brand presence worldwide.

With production underway and a targeted launch date set, the automotive industry will be watching closely to see how the MAZDA EZ-6 performs in the competitive global EV landscape.
