In a striking demonstration of its growing prominence in the electric vehicle (EV) market, Kia America reported record-breaking sales for its electrified models in September where the company’s performance stands out against a backdrop of slowing growth in the broader EV sector.

According to Kia, the company’s all-electric models saw a remarkable 43% increase in sales compared to September of the previous year. This growth was largely driven by the success of the new EV9, which sold 2,096 units in September alone. The EV9’s performance nearly matched that of the established EV6, which sold 1,612 units.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models also performed strongly, with sales rising 11% year-over-year. In total, Kia’s electrified models accounted for 17% of the company’s September sales volume.

Despite fewer selling days compared to the same period last year, Kia America reported total sales of 58,913 units for September. SUVs continued to dominate, making up 74% of the monthly total. 

Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations at Kia America, expressed on the company’s performance stating, “Double-digit sales gains for Kia’s EV and PHEV models prove Kia’s leadership position as the industry transitions to electrification.”

Moreover, Kia is set to maintain its sales momentum in its EV lineup by recently announcing a Tesla Competitive Bonus Cash Program, offering up to $1,500 off the EV9 and $1,000 off the EV6 for Tesla drivers.

Furthermore, Kia will offer North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for its EV6 and EV9 models. Buyers who purchase these models after September 2024 will receive free adapters, granting them access to over 16,500 Tesla Supercharger stations across the U.S. starting in January 2025.

Kia’s efforts in EV development have not gone unnoticed. The 2024 Kia EV9 GT-Line was named one of Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems for 2024, adding to its earlier recognition for interior design. 

The EV9 model also has been a champion in the industry, where it won several accolades from the 2024 World Car of the Year to the recently secured Gold trophy at the 2024 IDEA Awards.
