Hyundai has announced the production of its 100 millionth vehicle with the IONIQ 5 electric vehicle (EV) model being the 100 millionth and first vehicle. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s 57-year history that highlights its strategic pivot towards electrification.

Record-Breaking Achievement

Hyundai’s journey to 100 million vehicles took just 57 years, a pace that outstrips industry giants like Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, and Ford, each of which required nearly a century to reach the same milestone. This rapid ascent underscores Hyundai’s aggressive expansion and adaptation to changing market demands.

According to Hyundai, the IONIQ 5 as the 100 millionth vehicle rolled off the production line on September 30, 2024, at Hyundai’s Ulsan Plant in South Korea. This choice of vehicle symbolizes Hyundai’s commitment to leading the automotive industry into an electrified future.

Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, reflected on this achievement stating, “Reaching global cumulative production of 100 million vehicles is a meaningful milestone that was possible thanks to our customers around the world who have chosen and supported Hyundai Motor since the very beginning.”

Embracing the EV Future

Hyundai’s success story is increasingly intertwined with its push into electrification. The company’s journey in electric vehicles began in 1991 with its first EV prototype, the Sonata (Y2) EV. This early foray laid the groundwork for the dedicated IONIQ brand, launched in 2020.

The IONIQ 5, Hyundai’s midsize electric SUV, has been climbing global sales charts since its 2021 debut. It was followed by the IONIQ 6 “electrified streamliner” in 2022. The company is not resting on its laurels, with plans to introduce the three-row electric SUV, the IONIQ 9, later this year.

Expanding Global Footprint

Hyundai continues to expand its global presence. The company recently opened a robot-run smart facility in Singapore and is set to inaugurate its $7.6 billion Metaplant America in Georgia as early as next month. This new plant will produce the updated 2025 IONIQ 5, featuring an increased range and a Tesla NACS port.

As Hyundai celebrates this milestone, it’s clear that the company’s focus is firmly on the future. During its 2024 CEO Investor Day, Hyundai announced a new strategy to offer a more diverse portfolio of electric, hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles.

With its 100 millionth vehicle in the rearview mirror, Hyundai is accelerating into a future where EVs, advanced technology, and sustainable mobility solutions will likely define its next 100 million vehicles. As Hyundai celebrates this milestone, it is clear that the company’s focus includes enhancing its EV lineup while accelerating the transition to electric mobility.
