Hyundai has officially revealed its new sub-compact electric vehicle (EV), the INSTER, targeting the European market with a starting price below 25,000 euros.
Hyundai’s INSTER aims to popularize electric vehicles (EVs) in the A-segment while bridging the gap between traditional city cars and larger compact models. The INSTER is inspired by Hyundai’s gas-powered Casper sold in South Korea since 2021.
The INSTER will have two battery options: a standard 42 kWh pack and a long-range 49 kWh variant. In terms of performance, the base trim delivers 95 horsepower, while the long-range version delivers 113 horsepower. Both trims produce 147 Nm of torque. Moreover, Hyundai projects an estimated range of over 300 km (186 miles) for the standard trim of the INSTER and up to 355 km (221 miles) for the long-range model with 15-inch wheels.
Furthermore, INSTER arrives with an 11 kW onboard AC charger that will bring a full charge in 4 to 4.5 hours depending on the battery size. As for DC fast charging capabilities, it enables a 10% to 80% charge in just 30 minutes under optimal conditions.
The INSTER contains a redesigned all-electric platform that extends both the body and wheelbase for improved interior space. With dimensions of 3,825 mm in length, 1,610 mm in width, and 1,575 mm in height, the INSTER provides a compact footprint ideal for urban environments while providing up to 351 liters of luggage space with sliding rear seats.
As for the interior, the INSTER possesses a 10.25-inch digital cluster and infotainment touchscreen, customizable door panels made from recycled materials, and a unique robot emoji face on the rear window. Other notable features include Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, battery preconditioning, and an optional heat pump. In addition, Hyundai also teased a future trim called the INSTER CROSS, which will feature a outdoor-focused design.
Hyundai aims to launch the INSTER in South Korea this summer 2024 before expanding to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific markets. While exact pricing details are yet to be announced, Hyundai has committed to keeping the starting price below 25,000 euros, positioning it competitively against upcoming affordable EVs from other automakers.
With the introduction of the INSTER symbolizing Hyundai’s strategy to compete with affordable Chinese EVs in the European market, the blend of affordability, practicality, and advanced features is set to stand out in the sub-compact EV segment. As the INSTER’s launch adds more into Hyundai’s EV lineup, the European market will see its arrival with anticipation.
