General Motors (GM) has announced the release of an approved adapter allowing its electric vehicles (EVs) to access Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network.

According to GM, the company has begun selling an approved North American Charging Standard (NACS) DC adapter, priced at $225. This adapter allows GM EV owners to access Tesla’s Supercharger network, which includes over 17,800 chargers across North America.

With the addition of the Tesla Superchargers, GM EV owners now have access to more than 231,800 chargers throughout the continent. The adapters can be purchased through GM’s vehicle brand apps, which also offer features like locating charging stations and facilitating payments.

Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy, emphasized the company’s commitment to improving the EV experience stating, “Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless.”

Since GM announced in June 2023 that it will transition from the CCS (Combined Charging System) plug to Tesla’s NACS, while future GM EVs will feature the NACS port natively, this adapter solution allows current EV owners to immediately benefit from the expanded charging network.

Notably, GM is not alone in this transition. Other automakers including Ford, Hyundai, BMW, and Lucid Motors, have also announced plans to adopt the NACS standard. As a result, this industry-wide shift aligns with the Biden administration’s goal of making Tesla’s charging network accessible to all U.S. EVs by the end of 2024.

The adapter rollout begins immediately in the United States (U.S.), with plans to expand to Canada later this year. With this in mind, GM is working with multiple suppliers to ensure adequate availability of the adapters.

As the EV landscape continues to see more automakers adopting Tesla’s NACS in its EVs, this will simplify the charging process for EV owners and potentially smoothen and accelerate the path for widespread EV adoption.
