Ford issued a customer service action, requesting owners of its electric vehicles (EVs) to stop using the recently distributed North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters as they are being recalled due to potential issues that could affect charging performance and EV safety.

According to Ford, the company has identified a potential issue with a batch of NACS adapters that were distributed earlier this year. The company has warned that continued use of these adapters could lead to reduced charging speeds over time, and in some cases, cause damage to the vehicle’s charging port. The recall specifically affects owners of the Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E EVs who received these adapters.

In response, Ford is taking proactive measures by notifying affected customers and will provide replacement adapters at no cost. The company plans to begin shipping the new adapters during the week of October 28, 2023. Customers are encouraged to review and update their address in the FordPass account by October 24 to ensure smooth delivery of the replacements.

In the meantime, Ford strongly advises owners to stop using the initially supplied adapters immediately to avoid potential vehicle damage. While waiting for the replacement adapters, drivers are encouraged to use the FordPass app or other public charging apps to locate alternative charging options.

The NACS adapter initiative was part of a partnership announced in May between Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. This collaboration aimed to give Ford EV drivers access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, significantly expanding charging options for Ford EV owners.

Ford was the first major automaker to announce such a partnership, with many others following suit shortly after. The adapters were a temporary solution until Ford integrates the NACS port directly into its vehicles, expected to happen next year.

This recall raises questions about the challenges of integrating different charging standards and the importance of thorough testing in the rapidly evolving EV market. It may also temporarily slow down Ford’s efforts to provide its EV customers with expanded charging options.

Despite this setback, Ford continues to push forward with its electrification strategy. The company recently announced its “Ford Power Promise” program, offering new EV buyers a free Level 2 home charger and covering the cost of standard installation. This initiative aims to address common concerns about EV ownership and highlight the benefits of EVs, such as the convenience of waking up to a fully charged car every day.
