ChargePoint has secured over $19 million in funding to dramatically expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network across California’s highways, addressing the growing demand for EV charging stations and supporting the state’s clean transportation goals.

According to ChargePoint, the expansion is marked by significant funding, with over $19 million awarded through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. As part of this initiative, 248 DC fast charging ports will be installed at 45 sites along California highways. These new installations aim to improve accessibility and convenience for electric vehicle users traveling throughout the state.

The charging stations will utilize ChargePoint Express Plus technology, capable of delivering impressive charging speeds of up to 500 kW. This advanced technology ensures quick and efficient charging, reducing wait times for drivers. Furthermore, each station is designed to charge two vehicles simultaneously, maximizing the use of available infrastructure and enhancing overall efficiency.

This expansion is part of a larger effort, contributing to nearly $90 million in funding aimed at establishing 700 fast charging ports across 21 U.S. states. This broader initiative underscores a commitment to building a robust electric vehicle charging network nationwide.

Addressing Critical Infrastructure Needs

By strategically placing new charging stations along high-traffic routes, including Interstate 5, ChargePoint is working to connect California’s major cities with reliable and accessible charging solutions.

Rick Wilmer, President and CEO of ChargePoint, emphasized the company’s commitment to accessibility stating, “ChargePoint remains committed to delivering world-class solutions for every charging scenario, at-home and on the go. With the latest awards from California, ChargePoint and its partners continue to open NEVI-funded fast charging locations across the United States, ensuring all EV drivers can access charging when and where they need it via the ChargePoint mobile app.”

Advanced Technology Deployment

The ChargePoint Express Plus stations being deployed represent the cutting edge of charging technology. These modular platforms are designed to deliver impressive charging speeds of up to 500 kW, significantly reducing wait times for electric vehicle users.

One of the standout features of these stations is their ability to charge two vehicles simultaneously. This dual-charging capability maximizes efficiency and helps meet the growing demand for fast-charging infrastructure. Additionally, the stations incorporate proprietary cooling technology that ensures sustained high-performance charging.

Part of a Larger Initiative

The California Energy Commission (CEC) and the California Department of Transportation approved this funding as part of the state’s first round of the NEVI program. This initiative is part of a broader effort to develop a robust, accessible EV charging network along highways, improving infrastructure in both urban and rural areas.

ChargePoint’s success in securing this funding solidifies its position as a leader in the EV charging industry. The company has been awarded nearly $90 million in NEVI funding for around 700 fast-charging ports across 21 states, contributing significantly to the national goal of establishing a comprehensive DC fast-charging network.

With this latest funding and expansion plan, ChargePoint is not only addressing current needs but also preparing for a future where electric vehicles are the norm rather than the exception. As more states and regions invest in EV infrastructure, the dream of a nationwide network of fast, reliable charging stations is becoming increasingly tangible.
