CATL has unveiled its groundbreaking Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery with an unprecedented all-electric range of over 400 km (250 miles), challenging traditional limitations of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

Innovative EV Technology Integration

According to CATL, the company has integrated both lithium and sodium technology in this innovative system, which features impressive 4C ultra-fast charging capabilities. In practical terms, drivers can gain approximately 280 kilometers (175 miles) of range in just 10 minutes of charging – a performance level previously associated only with pure electric vehicles.

“This technology effectively eliminates the constant need to charge, a common drawback of existing hybrid vehicles,” explained Gao Huan, CTO of CATL’s China E-car Business.

Breakthroughs in Battery Performance

The new battery system incorporates several technological breakthroughs, including surface modification technology for the cathode material and an innovative high-voltage electrolyte formulation that creates a nano protective layer.

One of the most notable improvements is the battery’s enhanced cold-weather performance. The Freevoy can operate in extreme conditions as low as -40 degrees Celsius, addressing a crucial pain point for electric vehicle users. The system achieves this through CATL’s pioneering AB battery system integration technology, which cleverly combines sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries.

Market Adoption and Projections

The market impact is already evident, with several major automakers incorporating the technology into their vehicles. Li Auto, AVATR, DEEPAL, Changan Nevo, and NETA are among the first manufacturers to adopt the Freevoy battery. CATL projects that by 2025, the technology will power 30 hybrid vehicle models from various brands, including Geely, Chery, GAC, and VOYAH.

This development comes at a crucial time for China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market, which recently achieved record-breaking sales of 1.29 million units in September 2023, representing a 17% increase from the previous month. According to Bloomberg, PHEVs alone accounted for over 500,000 units, comprising 20% of all vehicles sold.

Rising Innovation in Battery Technology

The Freevoy battery system represents CATL’s latest innovation in a series of technological advances, following the introduction of their ultra-high-energy-density Tectrans bus battery and the Shenxing PLUS EV battery.

As the automotive landscape continues its transition toward embracing EVs, CATL’s new battery technology could prove instrumental in accelerating the adoption of more electric mobility solutions.
