BYD has reached an outstanding milestone in its electric vehicle (EV) strategy, rolling its 9 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) off the production line. This achievement was marked by the completion of a Yangwang U9 electric supercar at its Shenzhen plant.

Unprecedented Production Speed

In detail, what is particularly noteworthy is the pace at which BYD is achieving these milestones. The company produced its latest million vehicles in less than three months, a stark contrast to its earlier years.

At the start, BYD took 13 years to produce its first million NEVs, marking the company’s early efforts in the EV market. This slow but steady growth laid the foundation for its future expansion. However, momentum quickly picked up, and it took only 2 years and 3 months for BYD to reach the 5 million NEV milestone, reflecting a significant acceleration in production. This rapid scaling was driven by increased demand and improved manufacturing capabilities.

The company’s growth continued to skyrocket, taking just 11 months to move from 5 million to 8 million NEVs. Remarkably, BYD added another million vehicles in under 3 months, reaching the 9 million milestone, showcasing its dominance and efficiency in EV production.

Expanding Portfolio and Global Reach

The choice of the Yangwang U9 as the 9 millionth vehicle is significant, showcasing BYD’s ambitions in the luxury market. Priced at RMB 1.68 million ($239,230), the U9 is a high-performance electric supercar containing exceptional specs including four electric motors with a total peak power of 960 kW, 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 2.36 seconds, and a top speed of 375.12 km/h achieved in track tests.

Beyond China, BYD is actively expanding its global footprint. The company recently launched its second car carrier ship, capable of transporting 7,000 vehicles, to support its growing sales in European markets. There are also reports of plans to expand its portfolio in Japan with the introduction of the seven-seat Tang SUV.

As BYD continues to grow, the company’s rapid expansion and technological advancements position it to have an ever-increasing impact on the transition to electric mobility in the global automotive landscape.
