Ford has officially selected Long Beach, California, as the home for its electric vehicles (EVs) with its new Advanced Electric Vehicle Development Center. The campus will be dedicated to developing Ford’s next generation of affordable EVs.
Located in Douglas Park next to Long Beach Airport, the new campus will accommodate up to 450 employees working on a low-cost and flexible EV platform. Notably, this move marks Ford’s return to Long Beach, where it once operated an assembly plant from 1930 to 1958. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson welcomed Ford’s decision on his X account, stating that it aligns with the city’s “Grow Long Beach” economic strategy.
Moreover, the Long Beach center will complement Ford’s existing plants in Dearborn, Michigan, and Palo Alto, California. In detail, this represents the company’s strategic actions to attract top talent in a region known for innovation in both the automotive and aerospace sectors.
Furthermore, the team is led by Alan Clarke, a former Tesla executive with 12 years of experience. Ford also has assembled a “skunkworks” team of top talent from various EV and tech companies including Rivian, Lucid, Apple, and even eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) industry leaders like Archer Aviation and Joby.
As for Ford’s new EV platform, specific details and models remain undisclosed. Although it has been suggested that a $25,000 EV from Ford is unlikely to arrive before the end of 2026. However, this development signifies Ford’s dedication to expanding its EV lineup and competing in the growing affordable EV market.
With Ford’s investment in this new Advanced Electric Vehicle Development Center, it spotlights the company’s plans to maintain a leading position in the evolving automotive landscape. Ford’s new Advanced Electric Vehicle Development Center at Long Beach, California, set to open in early 2025.
